A First Look at Kim and Dan’s First Look!

I really love first looks. Mike and I did a first look six years ago, back before it really gained popularity, and I think it’s awesome! If it’s new to you, the general gist is that the bride and groom decide to throw tradition out the window and see each other before the ceremony. It’s a great way for the bride and groom to have a special moment before the nerves really kick in and before guests start arriving! That and you can really get some amazing photos out of the whole experience! Well, my latest couple, Kim and Dan, decided to take advantage of that idea, and I’m featuring some photos below! Now you can finally see some of the awesome scenery that the Thomas Birkby House has to offer (previous post of the photo booth blocked everything!).

My favorite part out of all of this is Dan’s reaction to how Kim looks. I love how in the fourth photo down (third photo in the final sequence) that he’s actually making an “Ooooooh, you look gooood!” remark! So hilarious and fun. I just love moments like these.

Kim and Dan’s Photo Booth – Leesburg, Virginia Wedding

This past weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Kim and Dan’s wedding, two very good friends of mine! We met almost a year ago, just before I took their engagement photos in Riverbend Park, and I have been eagerly awaiting their wedding ever since!

Well, I knew early on that Kim and Dan wanted a photo booth at their wedding, and I was very excited to incorporate that on their big day! Mike was nice enough to head up the photo booth for me while I ran around taking the wedding photos at the lovely Thomas Birkby House. I think the results were fantastic, as Kim and Dan’s guests were more than happy to indulge in some fun photos with props! Below are a few photos from the event, but if you’d like to see the whole gallery on Facebook, you’re more than welcome to here, or if you were a guest of the wedding and wish to see them without the watermark, you may go here and request your gallery password. Lisa Boggs and the Ninja Squirrels

Ninja squirrels. If you haven’t seen them yourself, you more than likely have heard of them. They are not ordinary squirrels, mind you. They are the types of squirrels that do anything for food. Anything. They plague the yards of millions of people every year. If I had to throw out a statistic based on zero facts, I’d say ninja squirrels occupy the yards of 72% of North American households. That, my friends, is a lot of ninja squirrels.

Today my ninja squirrels were up to their old tricks again on our bird feeder. I thought the semi-invisible wire that holds our feeder would keep those silly squirrels guessing for years. But no. They’re ninja squirrels, so they figured out in a few months that the semi-invisible wire was actually something they could climb down. Adjacent to the feeder is a bird bath that is empty most of the time unless I put water or food in it. Anywho, I’m just going to narrate what happened in the photos I took because it’s really hilarious. It involves ninja squirrel no. 1, and ninja squirrel no. 2. Here goes (narration under each photo):

“Look at meeeeeeeeeeee! I’m ninja squirrel no. 1! I’m dangling from from yo bird feeder! See my epic ninja moves? I cling to yo feeder with my crazy claws and then drop this seed down fo myself and the other ninja squirrels to eat! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! Take THAT!”

“Sometimes I don’t care about the other ninja squirrels, and I just cling to yo feeder and eat the bird seed all by myself. I got game! Look at my back legs! Don’t think I couldn’t karate chop yo face! I could! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! Hey…wait…what’s that noise…wha…WHA?………”

“NINJA SQUIRREL NO. 2! What are you DOING?!!! This is MY turf, boyyyyyyyyy! You don’t know how to jump into that bird bath! WHAT THE CUSS?!!! YOU’RE RUINING THE MISSIOOOOOOONNNNNN!!!!!!!”

“ABORT MISSSSSIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!”

Johanna and Bobby’s West Virginia Wedding – Sneak Peek!

I recently had the opportunity to travel to the Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, West Virginia to shoot Johanna and Bobby’s wedding! I was pumped for this wedding for a number of reasons. One was because I got to travel through West Virginia, which was, absolutely hands down, some of the prettiest mountain landscape I had seen in a while! Two was because I knew I’d get to see the bride and groom hitch a ride in a helicopter (Bobby is a helicopter pilot!). Yay! I was super excited on the day of to get started, and was blown away by how gorgeous some of Johanna and Bobby’s details were in the wedding! I had not seen peacock features used in a wedding to date, nor had I seen them incorporated with these beautiful rustic branches intertwined in the floral arrangements! As you’ll see I got a bit carried away with some detailed shots, but only because they looked amazing! Johanna also used the peacock green throughout the attire, including green in her dress, the bridesmaids dresses and the groomsmen ties. The event was beautiful, and I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding! I want to extend a huge thank you to the Johanna and Bobby’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, who were incredibly helpful to me during the photo taking process (they moved chairs for me! SO nice!). Also, many thanks to Johanna and Bobby for inviting me all the way to West Virginia to be part of their special occasion. You guys are the best and I hope you enjoy the photos below!

Rachel and Ryan’s McLean Virginia Wedding – Sneak Peek – Part II!

Alrighty folks, get ready for some party photos! As promised from my Part I blog post, here are the photos from Rachel and Ryan’s reception at the Springfield Golf and Country Club! The best part about this reception is that there was absolutely never a dull moment. Everyone was so high energy and so excited to be part of this special occasion, and it really shows in the photos! From the couple’s first dance, to the dudes chillin’ on the balcony with cigars, to Ryan breakin’ it down in his own dance, the emotion was always high! I love that! I hope you feel like you were right there in the celebration with Ryan, Rachel, their family and friends. Enjoy!

Rachel and Ryan’s McLean Virginia Wedding – Sneak Peek – Part I!

It’s time for the first of two lengthy blog posts of Rachel and Ryan’s wedding! Hurray!

I shot Rachel and Ryan’s engagement session in DC back in the early spring (not too long after Snowpocolypse), and I had been anxiously awaiting their wedding ever since! Their ceremony was at McLean Presbyterian, a gorgeous church just inside McLean, VA. It was the perfect setting, with lots of gorgeous brick and sophisticated white columns to work with in photos! Everyone at the church was super helpful, and the whole event went so smoothly! Rachel and Ryan of course looked amazing, and they worked so well with their wedding party to deliver some sassy and hilarious photos I requested! These photos are mostly taken at the church, with some of the wedding party photos taken right before the reception, at Springfield Golf and Country Club. However, Part II will include more of the par-tay photos at the reception where you get to see Ryan and his killer dance moves (along with everyone else at the wedding!). Rachel and Ryan’s Sneak Peek…Literally!

It really doesn’t matter what kind of photographer you are. You could shoot thousands and thousands of photos, but sometimes there are these gems that completely stand out above the others. That’s what this photo was to me at Rachel and Ryan’s wedding. I knew as I was taking it that it would be my favorite among all of the shots of theirs. Trust me, I’ve sifted through lots that are fantastic from their event (which you’ll see later this week), but this one tops them all. Why? This shot was quite literally a sneak peek. Rachel and Ryan had just become husband and wife, and they were absorbing all of that in a nearby prayer room. I was finishing up shots of their wedding party recessing out of the church, and also prepping for the group shots to take after the ceremony. After a good five to ten minutes, I exited the sanctuary to go talk to Ryan and Rachel and let them know we were almost ready to begin the group shots. Just before I got to the door of the prayer room, I looked up to see Ryan and Rachel hugging. I grabbed my camera, and “Click!” I took a photo of Rachel and Ryan kissing through that one panel of glass in the door I was about to knock on. A-maz-ing.

Now, I realize you can pose shots like this. I even have some photos right after this of them sitting and posing for me through that same panel of glass through the door. However, nothing beats the exhilaration of capturing a photo like that right when the moment happens. They had no idea I had taken that photo until afterward, and I just love that. You can’t get a moment like that back. Sure, you can pose it, but then you know it’s a pose. Knowing that this shot is candid makes it 100 times sweeter.

Jacqueline and Ryan’s Danville, VA Wedding – Sneak Peek!

I recently traveled down to Danville, VA (super close to North Carolina) to shoot Jacqueline and Ryan’s special day! I’ve known Jacqueline for a few years, as I’m very good friends with her older (and super talented photographer) brother, Jean-Paul! Jacqueline and Ryan’s wedding was full of such love, among some wonderful family and friends (who I was fortunate enough to meet and spend time with). I even got to spend some time with Hayden, Ryan’s son (and Jacqueline’s now step-son), who is such an amazing kid, and really took some great shots! As you’ll see from the photos below, everyone involved with the day was 100% dedicated to making it special for Jacqueline and Ryan! They all humored me with some hilarious shots, some of which are my favorite to date! I really had an endless supply of great scenes to work with too (from the storm before the ceremony, to the tractor waiting to tote our bride and groom to the reception, to ending the evening with a gorgeous sunset!). I hope you get as much joy out of looking at these shots as I do! Many thanks to Jacqueline, Ryan, their family and guests for being so loving and accommodating throughout the day. Enjoy!

Karla and Kevin’s Newton White Mansion Wedding – Sneak Peek!

K-squared. Confused? Don’t be! That’s Karla and Kevin! Two K’s destined to be together! I had the pleasure of meeting Karla and Kevin last year, and even took their engagement photos in a park with their dog, Taz. Their wedding finally rolled around this year, and I was ecstatic to shoot it! The lovely couple had their wedding at the Newton White Mansion, and although they intended to have their wedding outdoors, we got completely rained out! Instead, the ceremony and reception took place in the contemporary atrium that is an offshoot of the mansion, and really, it was the next best thing to being outdoors! As you’ll see from the photos, you can still see the lush green outside and the openness of the atrium really lent itself to great lighting. Of course, Karla and Kevin looked incredible and filled the scene with such love, fun, and laughter, that it really made for some spectacular photos. I hope you enjoy the photos below. Thank you to Karla and Kevin (and their guests!) for such a fun day!

Lindsey and Daniel’s DC Engagement Session – Sneak Peek!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with Lindsey and Daniel in Washington, DC for their engagement session! The day of our shoot was originally scheduled as hot and sunny, but we realized the day before (and on the day of) that we were going to be dodging some stormy weather. Luckily, by the time I arrived in DC, the huge storm that plagued most of the afternoon was on its way out, so we hit the jackpot! Lindsey and Daniel were interested in hitting up one of my favorite locations in DC, the World War I Memorial. This is an awesome location, because although it’s on the mall and very close to the WWII Memorial, it’s tucked away just enough to lend itself to some privacy. Not to mention, it’s just a really cool memorial! We took quite a few shots there and then tried a few different shots near the WWII Memorial on our way out. You can tell by the first photo that the storm was leaving, and everything was becoming a nice glistening gold as the sun was going down. By the time we left, the sky was so blue and gorgeous (with a few storm clouds approaching in the distance)! I couldn’t be happier with the photos that we got! Many thanks to Lindsey and Daniel for a super fun session! I can’t wait for your wedding next year!
