A Lovely Little Band Called The NRI's

As many of you know, my husband, Mike, is a musician.  And being married to a musician means I know several musicians.  It also means I get to photograph these musicians (yay!).  Enter: The NRI's! If you saw my blog post on We Were Pirates (my husbands band) then you'll likely recognize Mr. Gabe Fry in these band photos, as he's in The NRI's as well!  In fact, this shoot for their new CD came directly from his brain, as this amazing wall (the location of our shoot) is not far from his house!  I went against my better judgement and let Gabe talk me into doing these shots in crazy bright sunlight.  I understood he wanted everything to look bright and punchy, but I knew everyone would be Squinty McGee's!  But somehow, someway, we made it work and I think the photos turned out great.  The original idea was to make the spray painted "The" on the wall part of the band name "The NRI's," so in my head I was trying to create a composition where there was a little space for "NRI's" to go in the design of their CD/promotional materials.  In the end, the "The" got nixed, but I still think it turned out great due to Jesse's design skillz (Jesse being another band member).  Tonight is The NRI's CD release show at the Red Palace, and I cannot wait to see how this photo looks on their CD's and posters!  So if you don't have too much going on this evening, you can come out and hear them play awesome music and get to shake the hand of the photographer who took their photos.  ME!  Ha ha ha!  No, but really, you should come out to their show.  Doors open at 8:30 and show to follow at 9:30!

So, without further ado, meet Gabe, Nayan, Shawn, Jesse, Audrey and Melanie of The NRI's.  Here's the progression of the "winning photo!"

I asked Gabe to go get us a guitar from the car, and shot this little gem as he was running to go get it:

I loved how that looked, so we had him run with the guitar.  The rest of the band gave him high-fives occasionally:

Then we got the winning shot, just after the previous.  This is edited up to look super sassy:

And below is the shot all done up for promotion!  Isn't it pretty?  (Click to view a bit larger.)

This is the shot immediately after the winning one.  Just not as awesome:

And below are some out-takes.  Aren't they a lovely group?

Of course, we made Gabe run, so then I forced everyone to run too.  Ah, the powerful hand of the photographer!  Shots below...

They used some of these below shadows shots for promotional purposes too.  Whee!

I hope you enjoyed these and I hope to see everyone at the show tonight!  Yay!

Julia Turns One - A Falls Church Family Session!

So you may remember my previous post with Anne of Graceful Weddings (I did a family session with her son, Cole, and husband, Ben!).  Well meet the other part of Graceful Weddings, Anna!  Anna scheduled a session with me recently for her adorbs daughter, Julia.  Julia just turned one recently, so we had to take some photos of her looking super cute and also very birthday girl-like!  :)  So I met with Anna, Dallas and Julia at their home in Falls Church for a little photo shoot to commemorate the occasion! Julia is soooooooo cute and ridiculously high-energy!  We took some shots of her outside on a blanket first, and of course after sitting for a bit, she had to crawl around.  Do not think that Julia likes grass from these photos, because she does not! We did try and put her down in just grass and she just hated the texture, so back on the blanket she went!  She did stand up all by herself like a big girl until she decided to crawl again.  I'm told that Julia has actually taken her first steps since these photos, which is just incredible!  We did get some other family shots while we were outside before it actually started crazy storming, and I love the family shot of Anna, Dallas and Julia all together!

Inside the house, I got some shots of Julia playing with her toys.  I don't know what it is about kids and their toys, I swear, I could watch them play with toys for hours.  Maybe it's their little hands and big eyes trying to figure everything out, but I just become mesmerized!  Julia apparently is very good with round objects at the moment, and has memorized the slots that they belong in.  She's so smart!  After playtime, we went upstairs to the kitchen to commemorate her birthday with a Georgetown Cupcake!  At first, Julia looked very wide-eyed at it, like she really wanted it, but then she kind of had a meltdown and we didn't know why.  Turns out, Julia really wanted supper, and not in the form of a cupcake.  So, Anna fed Julia with some peas and carrots first, and after that Julia moved on to the cupcake for dessert!  She looked awesome eating her cupcake, and the second to last photo of her made me laugh so hard I almost cried.  Every kid deserves to smash a cupcake up and get it all over themselves!

Many thanks to Anna, Dallas and Julia for letting me come over and photograph the fam!  I had such a blast and I hope you like the photos.  And if anyone out there is in the market for a wedding planner, definitely contact Graceful Weddings!  Anna and Anne are two amazing ladies, and actually just added a third gal to their biz, Lauren!  I met all of them last night to see Bridesmaids together, and we had a blast.  They're just really great people!  :)  Enjoy!  And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JULIA!

Brooke and Aaron's Hendry House Wedding - Sneak Peek!

This past weekend was incredible, and one of those reasons was because I got to photograph Brooke and Aaron's wedding!  Held at the Hendry House, these two were married in traditional Jewish fashion under a chuppah among 130 friends and family.  One of my ideas toward the end of the evening was to get the couple back under the chuppah for some creative night portraits.  And it just so happened to be a little breezy, so it added a little drama to the photo which I just love!  I hope you like this sneak peek, and I can't wait to share more from Brooke and Aaron's big day!  Enjoy! And many thanks to Janice for her help with assisting on this shot!  Thanks for looking!

Erin and Jason's Lansdowne Resort Wedding - Sneak Peek!

I had such a blast this past weekend and Erin and Jason's wedding!  I couldn't say enough great things about this couple! I knew today that I had a couple of photos that I just absolutely adored when I took them, so those are the photos making the immediate sneak peek!  The first is of Erin in the limo on the way to the church.  I just loved the natural lighting and the general glow she had about her.  She looks stunning!  The second shot is one that myself and my second shooter, Asha, set up when some anticipated rain came through that night.  I knew I wanted to do something with the couple and an umbrella, and it worked out perfectly because it started pouring when we were taking these photos!  Luckily we were all fine, be it a bit more wet then when we first started the shot! Stay tuned for more from their wedding soon!  Enjoy!

Cole Turns Two - An Old Town, Alexandria Family Session!

One of the perks of being a wedding photographer is getting to meet so many great vendors along the way.  I first worked with Anne of Graceful Weddings two years ago (wow, I can't believe it's been two years!).  I've seen she and her sidekick, Anna, at events in 2010, and we just finished one in January of 2011 as well!  They're two of the nicest, most organized women in the industry, and I'm so glad I get to work with them! I knew both women had kids, and Anne recently contacted me to see if I could do portraits of their stinkin' adorable son, Cole!  Cole just turned two over the weekend (happy birthday, buddy!) so Anne and husband, Ben, decided they wanted to document Cole turning the big 2 and also get some family shots in!

We decided to meet on a warm day in Old Town, Alexandria, and just walk around to see what Cole liked.  It turns out that Cole really likes going up brick steps, hiding in wrought iron, going up to doors (of the blue variety) and knocking, and he likes running toward people!  He's a very social little guy, and it completely shows in the photographs.  We circled around some blocks in Old Town, but Cole knew the end result was going to be...ice cream!  As a little birthday celebration, we stopped in at Pop's Old Fashioned Ice Cream so Cole could eat some delicious strawberry ice cream.  I have to say, watching Cole eat was one of the most adorable things I've ever seen.  Anne and Ben had to help Cole with his giant bowl (he's only two, of course), and I think we got some really great shots of the three of them as well!

I asked Anne last night if she had any thoughts on Cole turning two, and this is what she said:  "Ben and I are so proud of the hilarious and sweet little boy he is becoming!  He was a month early (born on tax day and came home from the NICU on earth day) and he is still in a hurry all the time, to this day, always a step ahead of us.  :)  Oh yeah, and we triple puffy heart love Lisa Boggs!  :D"

So cute!  Thanks to Anne, Ben and Cole for such a fun day in Old Town!  Happy birthday, Cole!  :)

Lindsey and Daniel's Ceresville Mansion Wedding - Part Two!

If you missed Lindsey and Daniel's getting ready and ceremony photos from part one, go here!  However, if you're ready for some amazing reception photos full of a lot of laughter and fun, keep reading! As you may remember, Lindsey and Daniel had their entire wedding at Ceresville Mansion, so after the ceremony we headed indoors for dinner, dancing and festivities!  DJ Angie D kept us on track with everything, and really kept everyone engaged in the nights events.  DJ Angie D also came out on the dance floor to show guests moves to the songs if they didn't already know them, which was awesome!

I really love all the shots of the dancing from the evening.  It's hard to narrow down favorites, but I do love the portraits I was able to take of Lindsey and Daniel throughout the night, when we could catch a bit of a break!  The first few photos I thought were very Mad Men like, and if you know me well, you know I love Mad Men!  Lindsey and Daniel couldn't take a bad photo in my mind.  They were the perfect couple to work with!

Many thanks to Lindsey and Daniel for choosing me to be part of their special day!  Thanks to my assistant for the day, Asha, for all the help and encouragement...and also many thanks to family and friends I got to see at the wedding (some new, some old!)...you know who you are and you made the night even better!  :)

Jason, Katie and Blake's Family Cherry Blossom Session!

Yay!  It's time for Cherry Blossoms!  Okay, so I know that most of the blossoms are gone now, but not for me!  I've been looking at these photos of Jason, Katie and Blake for a while now, and I can't wait to show them! Katie is a fellow photographer I met recently at a networking event, and I was ecstatic when she asked if I would do family portraits for them!  She is a portrait photographer herself, so I felt like I had a lot to live up to!  When coming up with ideas for where to go, I really thought heading down to the Cherry Blossom's would be a lot of fun.  I always see photographers down their with engaged couples, but for some reason the idea of photographing a family there seemed really cool to me.  Especially with Blake, who is about a year-and-a-half old.  This would be his first Cherry Blossom experience, ever!  How cute is that?!

So, we all met down there on a Sunday morning to take the photos.  It was a really cold day, and we had to battle the Cherry Blossom 5K going on as we were all trying to meet up!  Amongst the craziness, we made everything work, and I really enjoyed the shots we got.  Jason and Katie were absolutely amazing with Blake, and new exactly all the games to play to make him laugh and have a great time.  Blake of course was adorable, whether smiling or not!  And we did sneak in a few shots of just Jason and Katie while Blake rocked it out to some music on Jason's phone.  So cute!  I have a special video I took of him rocking out at the end.  Hope everyone enjoys the photos!

Lindsey and Daniel's Cereseville Mansion Wedding - Part One!

I'm back to feature part one of Lindsey and Daniel's gorgeous Ceresville Mansion wedding!  If you missed their sneak peek from last week, take a look here! Ceresville Mansion was an amazing backdrop for what Lindsey and Daniel had in mind for their big day.  As you can see from the photos below, they went with a red/green/white theme, combined with a lot of natural elements like trees for their table decorations.  And the outdoor ceremony itself fit right in with that really natural, yet sophisticated look they were going for!  Lindsey looked absolutely stunning in her gown, and I particularly loved her purple heels she chose as her wedding shoes!  Combine her with Daniel in his dashing Army uniform, and you have one gorgeous bride and groom!

The setting was just stunning, and it was really hard to narrow down photos!  They are all beautiful, and everyone was so easy to work with to get the photos done quickly!  I do love the hilarious shots of the bridal and groomsmen parties though...particularly the one of the groomsmen watching some sporting event on a mobile device.  It's good to know that a wedding can't distract them from what's really important...a game!  Ha ha ha!  Enjoy the photos below, and stay tuned for their reception photos in part two!

Lindsey and Daniel's Cereseville Mansion Wedding - Sneak Peek!

It was an amazing weekend, and mostly because I got to photograph this incredible couple!  You may remember Lindsey and Daniel from their DC engagement session back in the summer.  Well, they're back on the blog, and this time they tied the knot in Frederick, Maryland at the incredible Ceresville Mansion!  This photograph in particular is my absolute favorite from the evening, so I had to share it straight away.  Although I love most of the photos I've seen from their wedding, this one just knocked my socks off (literally...where'd they go?  Who knows!).  Enjoy this sneak peek, and stay tuned for more shots from their beautiful wedding!

Jacqueline and Chris' Northern Virginia Wedding - Part One!

Last week you got a chance to view the  sneak peek from Jacqueline and Chris' wedding, and here are the official part one photos to their wedding!  Jaqueline, Chris and company started out the day at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens for the couples first look, which was nothing short of adorable!  I know both Jacqueline and Chris were nervous leading up to that moment, but all of that totally melted away once they saw one another!  You can see it in the photos!  :) After the first look, we hightailed it over to McLean Presbyterian Church to take some more photos before the start of the ceremony.  I was pretty pleased with the level of sass that the groomsmen and bridal party portrayed in their shots!  It's hard to pick a winner, but I think the guys might have a slight edge over the girls.  Eh?  Maybe?  ;)  I also loved the detail shots I was able to get of the girls shoes (Jacqueline loooooves red shoes), flowers (by Flowers & Plants, Etc.) along with Jacqueline and Chris' beyond gorgeous rings!  The ceremony was absolutely beautiful, and my heart melted when Jacqueline and Chris had their first kiss as a married couple.  Seriously, it's the most classy first kiss I have ever seen!

Following the ceremony, we went back to Meadowlark (the reception site) and finished up the rest of the formals on site with Jacqueline, Chris and the wedding party.  I loved the energy everyone brought to the photos, particularly for the men jumping and the girls twirling shots!  The twirling shot was a result of the girls having really great dresses, but also because I had Chris twirl Jacqueline in an engagement shot too, so the consistency there was really nice!  I had to end with a shot that I already had in the sneak peeks, just because it's one of my fav's!

Enjoy the photos below, and stay tuned for the final part two coming your way soon!

Valley of Fire Photo Shoot with My Photographer Friends!

Life just wouldn't be the same if I didn't have my photographer friends around to keep me company. Not only do they keep me laughing constantly, but they're such a source of inspiration! I love when I get to spend time with them, with or without the camera. To be able to exchange information and know they share the same kind of joys and fears that you do is a breath of fresh air! I recently spent a good five days in Las Vegas at the WPPI Convention learning from polished pro's in the industry, while also getting to scour new resources and equipment that might benefit Lisa Boggs Photography! It was definitely eye-opening on many levels, and I'm excited to have gone and gained all of that knowledge! However, my most favorite moments from the trip definitely involved hanging out with my photo buddies. We are all super busy most of the time with our businesses, so it was just amazing to get to hang out, relax, party and even get to practice some of our new photography techniques on one another! Below are some photos taken on our last day in town, when we decided to go out to the Valley of Fire State Park, about an hour outside of Las Vegas. Words cannot describe how gorgeous this place was! We had a great time driving around and trying out some off-camera flash techniques while the sun was going down. Thanks to my buddies, Cicely, Jason and Mindy for being such great guides, assistants, photographers and models!  And of course, many thanks to my husband Mike for looking smashing as always (even though he was sick!).  I love you guys!  :)
