Stephanie and Brian's Meadowlark Botanical Gardens Engagement Session!

I'm so excited to share Stephanie and Brian's Meadowlark Botanical Gardens session with you today!  Stephanie and Brian are two of the nicest, most laid-back people I've ever met.  And, as it turns out, Stephanie and I discovered she went to grad school with one of my closest friends after she booked me!  Bonus for working with friends of friends!  :) Stephanie, Brian and I met up on a cold October day to begin their engagement session with their pup, Charlie.  I'm a sucker for dogs, so of course I couldn't resist having him in a few photos!  After we left Charlie at Stephanie and Brian's house, we drove over to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, the location for their wedding.  Even though it was cold outside, everything looked so warm and inviting!  The colors on the trees were looking bright and lovely and some of the lighting at Meadowlark that day was spot on.  Brian was great and kept Stephanie nice and warm, which is what every fantastic fiancé should do during a cold engagement session, amiright?  ;)  My favorite photos of Stephanie and Brian were at the very end when the sun was going down.  Brian and I concurred that, even though we were on our way out of the gardens, the light was too good to resist photographing with!  I am so glad we stopped and made those photographs happen!

Stephanie and Brian (and Charlie), I love you guys and these photos and I cannot wait for you upcoming wedding this year at Meadowlark!  Hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do!

Jodi and John's Gorgeous Bluemont Vineyard Wedding!

Jodi and John's wedding can be summed up in one word: epic.  Jodi and John were married at Bluemont Vineyard on a gorgeous, sunny day.  Oh wait.  Scratch that.  It was sunny 90% of the time as you can see below, but a monsoon-like storm decided to make an appearance right at the beginning of the ceremony.  Doh!  So, we all ran inside from the porch and had an intimate ceremony right inside the Stable of Bluemont Vineyard, and it couldn't have gone any better. Aside from the storm, the epic-ness of Jodi and John looking like celebrities plus their insanely attractive (not to mention enthusiastic) friends and family made the day unforgettable.  They also know how to partyyyyyyyyy!  So, I'm calling their whole crew the "party animodels" (party animals + models).  As you can see below, everyone had an amazing time celebrating Jodi and John's special day.  I was so thrilled to be a part of it and can't thank them enough!  I hope you enjoy your photos, Jodi and John!  Muah!  :D

Meet the Team of A Sweet Soirée Events!

Just a few weeks back I was thrilled to be able to photograph the wedding planning team of A Sweet Soirée Events!  I have been working with Courtney Swierczek, the CEO (Chief Events Officer…as she calls it!), since 2010.  Courtney is an absolute pleasure to work with, and I'm very excited to continue working with her and her team in the upcoming 2012 wedding season!  Courtney was gracious enough to write up something about the styled shoot that we did with her and her new employees Ellen, Karen and Marisa...so without further ado, here's Courtney! "I am so excited to have Lisa share our styled photo shoot with her readers, and I'd love to share a bit of our background story to it. We are so thrilled and proud that A Sweet Soirée Events was able to hire three new employees last year to serve our clients. But along with it, came the need for cohesive head shots and group photos for our website and marketing materials. Of course when thinking of who would be the best to shoot our group, I immediately thought of Lisa. We work so well together and I knew she'd be able to make us comfortable and bring out the 'us' in us.

We knew we wanted to do something fun for the shoot instead of boring ole' regular head shots, so Karen and Marisa came up with the idea to do a styled shoot much like it was it's own little wedding. We incorporated our company colors of black, gold, peaches, and pinks into everything from the table cloths to the flowers, and added a touch of french from the french macaroons to the champagne on ice.

We are so, so pleased with the result, and hope that you enjoy our company's reintroduction and styling!"

Thanks so much, Courtney!  I hope you all enjoy the photos, and if you are looking for a wedding planning team, definitely check out A Sweet Soirée Events!  You can also find them on Facebook here and Twitter here.  Also, many thanks to the Briar Patch Bed and Breakfast for letting us use their venue!  Thanks for reading!

A Trip to See the Grandparents

My grandparents are the cutest.  No really.  You think yours are, but you're wrong.  Kidding, kidding!  But Gramma and Grampa (as we call them in the family) certainly top the charts as some of the cutest and greatest grandparents of all time. This past weekend my sister, Nicole, and I drove up to upstate New York to visit them.  We had the urge a few months ago, as it hit us that we really don't know as much as we want to know about them.  And we wanted that to change.  So we spent four days with them, helping them with some household chores, teaching them about some new technology, and just plain old hanging out with them.   It was amazing.

We learned so much.  So much that we never knew and we are so honored to know now.  I was able to get some of what they had to say on video, which is not edited or ready for the viewing public quite yet.  But some of our favorite questions we asked them involved their marriage, and I really loved what they said.  Here's some dialogue from the Q&A's with Gramma and Grampa (who have been married for 63 years!):

Us (to Gramma):  "What do you like most about Grampa?"

Gramma:  (laughs as she's drinking her hot chocolate) "You'll have to ask your mother.  She sent a form to us a few years ago that she uses with her classes sometimes.  And she laughed and laughed because on Grampa's form, the same question was 'What do you like most about your spouse,' and Grampa just put, 'She loves me.' And  for my answer I wrote here and here and around the edge of the paper, 'He's handsome and he's truthful..." and all of this stuff you know.  And she took this to school for an example of how things are sometimes with women and men.

Us:  "Is there one thing you like the most?"

Gramma:  "Well I don't think there's one thing.  He's very honest.  And he's trustworthy.  He's been a great husband, he's been a very good father.  There are a lot of other things, but those are big important ones."

Us: "What is the best thing that's ever happened to you?"

Gramma:  "Well, I suppose marrying Grampa.  And then the next eight things are our eight kids.  And then the next twenty-three things are all you grandkids."

--

Us to Grampa:  "What do you like most about Gramma?"

Grampa:  "About Gramma?  Wow, these are tough questions!"  (we start giggling, and Gramma interjects from across the room with, 'Don't be smart!  There outta be one thing!'  Grampa calms down and then says...)  She's usually happy."

Us:  "How did you know Gramma was the one?"

Grampa:  "We had gone together enough so that we knew what each other liked and disliked, and so consequently we got together."

Us:  "What are some of the happiest memories you have?"

Grampa:  "I was happy with most of the things we did.  We started our marriage with not a cent.  We didn't have any money at all.  And even our honeymoon was up in a state park.  We gradually gathered together enough to buy a home and come out with a little bit left.  So we don't worry about the future.  Because we have enough to carry ourselves through.

I was happy when our children were growing up.  Each one would come along and we would enjoy having them.  And they were different, all of them different.  So, we were able to enjoy them as they grew up, and that was a happy part.

Gramma and I had many happy days.  One of the things that always made me happy was we never argued seriously or fought.  If we disagreed, we disagreed, and that would be it.  It wouldn't be held over until the next day, or the next month, or the next year.  It was over.  And I think if married couples can agree to that kind of approach, then they'll have a very successful life.  So I can't even think of one major thing that we disagreed on that wasn't settled or forgotten.  There weren't many arguments."  (he grins)

--

So, as I'm sure you'll agree by now, they're just the cutest ever.  And if you didn't think that before this next photo, I'm pretty sure it will solidify it for you.  Thanks for reading, and if you have grandparents and have never interviewed them, I highly recommend it.  It's really quite incredible.

Thanks for reading!

The Old Town Alexandria Squirrel

This photo is too ah-mazing not to post now.  I know, I know, it's the weekend, but I don't care.  I have lots to post on this week and I just could not hold out on keeping this photo from you any longer!  This is a squirrel I photographed in Old Town Alexandria.  I spotted it when it was climbing up the tree to eat (what resembled to be) a cookie.  It stopped and perched on a branch for a bit to eat, so I took out my camera.  It didn't like me pointing my giant zoom lens at it, so it decided to jump up to a higher part of the tree.  Guess which part I photographed?  ;) undefined Thanks for looking!

Every Day We Make It, We'll Make It the Best We Can

It's Monday.  I don't think it matters what kind of job you have...when Monday's roll around, don't be surprised to be in a bit of a funk.  I just got back in town from a delightful trip to Nashville and am having a hard time trying to get back into my workflow and checking things off the task manager!  I took my Panasonic Lumix LX3 with me on my trip and decided to review some photos today to see if anything stood out.  Although I'll blog on some other photos from the trip, the one photo that really stood out to me today was from my tour at the Jack Daniel's Distillery with Mike and company.  We discovered this sign at one of the small cabins along the tour, and it just so happens to be a quote from Mr. Jack Daniel himself: It's the perfect quote to get me inspired today.  Whether you make whiskey, take photos, are having a not-so-hot Monday, or are having the best Monday ever...just make your day and what you do the best you can for today.

Blog post...check!  :)

The Family of Squirrels that Lives in My Tree

Good afternoon, readers!  Today I'm bringing to you some more photos of the adorable squirrels that live on our property.  Up until recently, I knew that most of the squirrels that came to feast on the bird food were from some pine trees that line the side of our property.  However, a most recent discovery indicates that the squirrels that feast on the front yard feeder actually live a large maple tree in the front yard.  You may be thinking, 'How does she know that? Surely she has no proof of this!'  Well readers, you are wrong! My discovery of the tree-dwellers happened when I went to get the mail one day.  I noticed a squirrel at the feeder, then as I approached it, it ran up the tree lightning fast...into a HOLE!  Ever since, I have been stalking what I have now deemed "the squirrel hole," and have been documenting its inhabitants ever since!  The best series I have thus far is below, and includes a squirrel peeping out of the hole, and then a second squirrel who forces his way past first squirrel down the chute.  So adorbs!  Definitely take a looksie for a warm fuzzy.  And so far I have not named the squirrels yet, so let me know if you have any suggestions!  Enjoy!

Valley of Fire Photo Shoot with My Photographer Friends!

Life just wouldn't be the same if I didn't have my photographer friends around to keep me company. Not only do they keep me laughing constantly, but they're such a source of inspiration! I love when I get to spend time with them, with or without the camera. To be able to exchange information and know they share the same kind of joys and fears that you do is a breath of fresh air! I recently spent a good five days in Las Vegas at the WPPI Convention learning from polished pro's in the industry, while also getting to scour new resources and equipment that might benefit Lisa Boggs Photography! It was definitely eye-opening on many levels, and I'm excited to have gone and gained all of that knowledge! However, my most favorite moments from the trip definitely involved hanging out with my photo buddies. We are all super busy most of the time with our businesses, so it was just amazing to get to hang out, relax, party and even get to practice some of our new photography techniques on one another! Below are some photos taken on our last day in town, when we decided to go out to the Valley of Fire State Park, about an hour outside of Las Vegas. Words cannot describe how gorgeous this place was! We had a great time driving around and trying out some off-camera flash techniques while the sun was going down. Thanks to my buddies, Cicely, Jason and Mindy for being such great guides, assistants, photographers and models!  And of course, many thanks to my husband Mike for looking smashing as always (even though he was sick!).  I love you guys!  :)

Lisa Boggs Loves Squirrels!

Back in August of 2010, I did a little post that received a lot of attention entitled "Lisa Boggs and the Ninja Squirrels."  As a result of the posts popularity (and of course, eh hem, my popularity?  Not!) I have decided I must make it a point to blog more on squirrels.  And just other animals in general.  Why?  Because dear friends, when I am not behind my lovely computer, and when I am not out photographing weddings and portraits, I am peering out of the windows of my home.  Looking at squirrels.  And birds too...bird watching/identifying is a new hobby of mine as well (of which you will see photos of later).  So you see, I am not just a crazy wedding and portrait photographer that is too busy for cute things like squirrels and birds!  I stop, I watch them...I photograph them.  And to be perfectly honest, those little buggers totally see me and look at me.  It's crazy!  So, here are a few photos I took over the past few days of the squirrelios.  More to come along the way...of which I hope at the very least make you giggle. Also, I have to plug my adorable dog Penny, who will probably make it on the blog again as well.  I just can't help myself.  :)

P.S.  Is it wrong that in my head I'm singing "Squirrels!" to the Beastie Boys tune of "Girls?"  Too far?

Thanks for looking!

A Lovely Little Band Called We Were Pirates

I am a lucky gal to be married to frontman Mike Boggs of We Were Pirates.  Not only is he a strikingly handsome dude, but he plays and records honestly good music, of which I get to hear every so often (and by "every so often" I mean every day  *grin*).  Well, I'm blogging on this super talented guy and his bandmates that will be accompanying him this Sunday, February 13 for a show at the Black Cat!  The photos below are a good representation of just how attractive this team of former pirates is, so consider yourself lucky if you get to feast your eyes on this rock 'n' roll eye candy.  Enjoy the photos below (from their recent Rock N Roll Hotel show), and for deets on the show, scroll to the bottom! (Oh, and if you have a moment or so, vote for them at Artist of the Month for DC/Baltimore bands in the Deli Magazine contest!  Yay!)

Great Falls Fire Station Demolition - Great Falls, Virginia

Today marked a big event in Great Falls, Virginia - the demolition of the fire station that has been serving the Great Falls community since 1960. I don't live too far from the station, so when I was informed it was going to be torn down today, I decided to take the opportunity to document it. It's not every day that a 50-year-old fire house gets torn down, and if you know anything about where it's located, you know it's on a very public and busy road (Georgetown Pike) directly across from the post office. Many people, young and old, stopped to watch the demolition. Although I missed the demolition of the three garages (which my sister-in-law photographed...hope to post that link later!), I was fortunate enough to be there when they tore down the entrance to the fire station, and the glass window that read "9916." I took video as well, so please enjoy the photographs and video compilation at the bottom! I'd like to thank Diana who is in the video below (last segment) for speaking with me today and getting me two bricks from the firehouse! Yippee! Also, if any of you readers would like to use these images for publication or personal use, please write me at lisa@lisaboggsphotography.com. You are more than welcome to publish, so long as I receive photo credit! Thanks, and enjoy!

Here's a before picture that I found on the interwebs. I can't believe I didn't take a photo of it prior to demolition (sorry!):

And here is demolition (gasp!):

Bye bye, water heater:

This is the aftermath (taken at 5:00 pm):

This last one is lit by the rush hour cars passing by...nice off-camera lighting!

Here's the video:

Oh! I forgot to mention...not to worry, the firemen and women are safely hanging out in their temporary facility, located directly behind the old firehouse (which you can see in the last two photos, the green and white buildings). Additionally, to read information on the new fire station that will be constructed soon, go here. Thanks for looking!

Lisa Boggs Wins Accolade of Excellence in the 2010 WPPI 1st Half International Photography Competition

I'm not a person who typically enters competitions. In fact, I haven't entered a real competition since college, when I was competing with my peers in fine art. But, this year I thought I'd take a stab entering 2010 WPPI 1st Half International Photography Competition. I was pleased to find out recently that I received an Accolade of Excellence in the competition for a portrait I had taken! I entitled it "Laura B." and it's from the shoot I did of my cousin-in-law for her band, The Mynabirds. Here's the release from WPPI about the win: Lisa Boggs Wins Accolade of Excellence  in the 2010 WPPI 1st Half International Photography Competition

Lisa Boggs of Great Falls, VA, has received special honors in the WEDDING & PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERS INTERNATIONAL 2010 WPPI 1st Half International Photography Competition.  Designed to recognize outstanding photographers, the judging was held in Culver City, CA on September, 2010.

"Laura B." received an Accolade of Excellence in the Individual category.

Boggs competed against an international field of photographers to win such honors.

The WPPI 1st Half International Photography Competition awards are presented each year at the largest trade show, educational platform and convention in the United States for professional photographers.  The 2010 competition included 2511 images in 17 different categories submitted by photographers from all over the world.

Aaaaaaaand here's the photo!

You can also view the blog post I did on Laura's photo shoot here and if you would like to explore her ridiculously awesome music (she's been on tour with David Bazan!), please go here.

Hurray! Thanks for reading!

Penny Boggs - The Brains Behind Lisa Boggs Photography

You may not realize this, but the brains behind my photography have nothing to do with me or Mike. They do, in fact, have everything to do with our dog, Penny Lane Boggs. Penny knows when I've been working too much. She'll sit down by me and howl at me until I take a break and play frisbee with her. Sure, she really wants to play frisbee, but I know in the back of her mind she's thinking, 'Lisa is working far too hard and needs a break. She's worked on this one task too long, and she needs to come back to it in a few.' And she's RIGHT! She's such a smart dog. Well, this post is dedicated to our beloved dog, Penny. We got her two years ago on Friday from the Middleburg Humane Foundation. She's a german shepherd/border collie mix, and is the prettiest dog in all the land!

We've been through so much in the past two years: Three dog training classes (one puppy, two intermediate), Penny getting out of the yard and us chasing her (I guesstimate about 10-15 times, mostly all related to her not listening to me), Penny getting hit by a car after trying to see another dog across the street (which she miraculously survived), Penny eating a non-toxic putty that didn't hurt her, and most recently, Penny getting Lyme disease and surviving that whole ordeal. We joke in the Boggs household that Penny really has used up 9 cat lives (maybe that's double, since she's such a big dog). At any rate, we're still so happy to have her in our lives. It's hard to imagine what life would be like without her, and she really does make every day a joy. Penny dog, we love you!

Below are three photos of Penny as a puppy, and then two recent photos from us playing outside. I hope you enjoy!

This is the photo we saw of Penny online before we got to adopt her! Her name was Lucy at the time (she's on the left), and she's pictured with her brother who was adopted before we could meet him too:

This is Penny on her first day with us! She was fetching Mr. Platypus for us:

This was Penny posing for me with Mr. Puppy (her stuffed animal friend):

And this is Penny now! Outside watching Mike as he's taunting her with a frisbee:

And this is Penny running back to Mike waiting for the frisbee (click to view larger):

Lisa Boggs and the Ninja Squirrels

Ninja squirrels. If you haven't seen them yourself, you more than likely have heard of them. They are not ordinary squirrels, mind you. They are the types of squirrels that do anything for food. Anything. They plague the yards of millions of people every year. If I had to throw out a statistic based on zero facts, I'd say ninja squirrels occupy the yards of 72% of North American households. That, my friends, is a lot of ninja squirrels. Today my ninja squirrels were up to their old tricks again on our bird feeder. I thought the semi-invisible wire that holds our feeder would keep those silly squirrels guessing for years. But no. They're ninja squirrels, so they figured out in a few months that the semi-invisible wire was actually something they could climb down. Adjacent to the feeder is a bird bath that is empty most of the time unless I put water or food in it. Anywho, I'm just going to narrate what happened in the photos I took because it's really hilarious. It involves ninja squirrel no. 1, and ninja squirrel no. 2. Here goes (narration under each photo):

"Look at meeeeeeeeeeee! I'm ninja squirrel no. 1! I'm dangling from from yo bird feeder! See my epic ninja moves? I cling to yo feeder with my crazy claws and then drop this seed down fo myself and the other ninja squirrels to eat! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! Take THAT!"

"Sometimes I don't care about the other ninja squirrels, and I just cling to yo feeder and eat the bird seed all by myself. I got game! Look at my back legs! Don't think I couldn't karate chop yo face! I could! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! Hey...wait...what's that noise...wha...WHA?........."

"NINJA SQUIRREL NO. 2! What are you DOING?!!! This is MY turf, boyyyyyyyyy! You don't know how to jump into that bird bath! WHAT THE CUSS?!!! YOU'RE RUINING THE MISSIOOOOOOONNNNNN!!!!!!!"

"ABORT MISSSSSIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!"

Lisa

Disclaimer: No ninja squirrels were injured for the creation of this photographic sequence. All ninja squirrels are alive and well, and hopefully will be back for future blog posts.

P.S. I am now excepting new names for Ninja Squirrel No. 1 and Ninja Squirrel No. 2. Please feel free to leave suggestions in the comments!

LBP has a New Facebook Page!

Whoa! Look out! To further confuse everyone, I'm blogging about my new Facebook page (which is here). Eventually this will post in a note that will pop up in Facebook as well, which should be super fun! If you "like" me (and I think we can agree, if you've made it this far in the blog post, you probably do), you should totally hit that "Like" button on my page! Cool? Cool!

Thanks ya'll!

1st Annual Joe Cassella 5K Run & Walk

Last weekend I was asked to photograph the 1st Annual Joe Cassella 5K Run & Walk. I was really excited to be part of this event, especially because almost all my weekends have been consumed with weddings! So, as fate would have it, I had the date free and was able to commit! I knew of the event because myself and my family are part of Elite Fitness Concepts, a local gym here in Great Falls, VA. Mike and I became really good friends with the staff straight away, and particularly with Pat DeRocco, one of the trainers. When we first joined, we learned pretty quickly that Pat's brother-in-law (and owner of Elite), Joe Cassella, was battling cancer. We never met Joe, but we heard nothing but the absolute best about him, and he lost his life to mesothelioma on July 11, 2009. This event was established to carry on Joe's random acts of kindess, as Joe himself created a 5K in honor of Peter Choo, a local Great Falls resident who lost his life to cancer back in 2007. All proceeds of this event will benefit the Cassella Children's Education Trust Fund and The Miracle League. To donate you can go to: http://www.joecassella5k.com/donate.html.

The event was a major success, particularly in part to the coordinating efforts of Pat DeRocco and Vivi Cassella! It rained almost the entire time (from registration, to running, to the awards!), but it didn't keep anyone away! As you can see below, the turnout was amazing, and it was a wonderful time for all. Thanks to Pat and Vivi for allowing me to be part of such a special occasion, and please enjoy the photos below!
