Kim and Dan's Thomas Birkby House Wedding - Leesburg, Virginia!

If you haven't already figured it out, I love Kim and Dan! After I shot their engagements, we became very good friends, and it is always so much fun to shoot a friend’s wedding.  You'll see that their wedding did not disappoint in terms of details, moments, and color! To borrow from Steel Magnolias, Kim's colors were purple and purple (not pink and pink!). Lavender was everywhere, and it was gorgeous. One nice surprise was that lavender was actually growing at the Birkby house in the spot we took the first look and some wedding party photos. It matched perfectly! I mentioned this in their previous blog posts here and here, but their wedding was at the historic Thomas Birkby House in Leesburg, VA. The setting is stunning and has great-looking photo opportunities everywhere you turn. Dan and I talked about how I would describe their wedding, and he came up with "Contemporary Country," and I think that totally fits! The setting was refined and sophisticated, but had great classical and even rural elements, like the wooden backdrop of the first-looks. There were also some fun and unique elements like the photo booth and Kim’s inspired choice of pie instead of cake!

I have to give a big thank you to Kim and Dan for allowing me to be their photographer on their special day. I had a great time as a friend and a photographer, and that makes it twice as special! Also, many thanks to Mary Louise of the Birkby House for her incredible patience, Courtney of A Sweet Soiree for her steadfast planning and help, Dave from Blue Sky Films for working so well with me, and Kate Rogers for her beautiful harp playing (as usual). Kim and Dan also used Celebrations Catering for their delicious meal and Mom's Apple Pie of Leesburg, VA for their wedding pie (not cake!). These vendors were incredible, so if you're on the hunt, certainly give them a call!

Enjoy!

A First Look at Kim and Dan's First Look - Thomas Birkby House, Leesburg, Virginia!

I really love first looks. Mike and I did a first look six years ago, back before it really gained popularity, and I think it's awesome! If it's new to you, the general gist is that the bride and groom decide to throw tradition out the window and see each other before the ceremony. It's a great way for the bride and groom to have a special moment before the nerves really kick in and before guests start arriving! That and you can really get some amazing photos out of the whole experience! Well, my latest couple, Kim and Dan, decided to take advantage of that idea, and I'm featuring some photos below! Now you can finally see some of the awesome scenery that the Thomas Birkby House has to offer (previous post of the photo booth blocked everything!). My favorite part out of all of this is Dan's reaction to how Kim looks. I love how in the fourth photo down (third photo in the final sequence) that he's actually making an "Ooooooh, you look gooood!" remark! So hilarious and fun. I just love moments like these.

Stay tuned for more of Kim and Dan next week!

Kim and Dan's Photo Booth - Thomas Birkby House, Leesburg, Virginia!

This past weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Kim and Dan's wedding, two very good friends of mine! We met almost a year ago, just before I took their engagement photos in Riverbend Park, and I have been eagerly awaiting their wedding ever since! Well, I knew early on that Kim and Dan wanted a photo booth at their wedding, and I was very excited to incorporate that on their big day! Mike was nice enough to head up the photo booth for me while I ran around taking the wedding photos at the lovely Thomas Birkby House. I think the results were fantastic, as Kim and Dan's guests were more than happy to indulge in some fun photos with props! Below are a few photos from the event, but if you'd like to see the whole gallery on Facebook, you're more than welcome to here, or if you were a guest of the wedding and wish to see them without the watermark, you may go here and request your gallery password. Enjoy!

Kimberly and Dan's Riverbend Park Engagement Session

This past weekend I photographed Kimberly and Dan at Riverbend Park in Great Falls, VA, a lovely little park on the calm side of the Potomac.  I go there all the time, as it's a great place to hike, bring the dog, and even go on the beaches and wade in the water.  So much fun!  Kimberly and Dan saw a series I did with a friend here, and really wanted to create some images similar to those.  I was certainly up for the challenge, even though we had fewer leaves on the trees!  However, the day turned out really lovely!  It was in the 70's that day, and splashing around in some water wasn't entirely crazy, even though it's November!  Below are some images from the occasion.  It's hard for me to pick out favorites, but I really do love the weeping cherry photo (number two) and the last photo with the geese flying in the background!  Thank you to Kimberly and Dan for a super fun time...and a big shout out to Dan (effing-a!).  Enjoy! k&d_riverbend_engagement_1
