Weddings

Thank You to My 2012 Wedding Couples

Looking back on 2012, I am the luckiest lady alive to have been a part of 24 amazing weddings.  That's 48 individuals who got hitched, not to mention their families and friends that I had the pleasure of meeting as well!  So crazy! So, couples...are you reading?  :)  I want each and every one of you to know how honored I am to have been able to share your special day with you. The fact that you trusted me with photographing your wedding means the world to me!  And so I'm going to thank you, each couple at a time, with what what I remember most about your wedding.  And of course I'm going to include a couple of my favorite photos from your wedding day underneath my little notes!  So without further ado, here are my incredible couples...

Katie and Jeff, thank you for having one of the warmest weddings on record in February.  And thank you for letting me drag you around a country club looking for the perfect (non-golf course) shots.  Also, I will be opening my Nebbiolo soon, and I seriously can't wait.  Thank you for that!

Maggie and Lucas, thank you for allowing me to take those window photos of you guys.  I know each time we were really pressed for time, but the fact that you let me do my thing was so great.  Also, thanks for breaking some rules in Old Town and sneaking on to the dock where you got engaged for a photo!

Crystal and Stephen, thank you for your patience on a day when it rained all day long.  I'm so happy you brought umbrellas so we could at least go out in it.  And thank you to Stephen for having a security clearance so we could go take my favorite night time shot from your wedding.  Also, many congrats on your new addition to the family, little Lillian!

Suzannah and Keith, thank you for having one of the most relaxed weddings I've ever photographed.  Suzannah, than you for jumping up and down like a school girl right before you and Keith kissed (so cute!).   And thank you, Keith, for letting me wear your crazy warm coat during our freezing cold night time shot!

Maria and Wayne, thank you for your infectious optimism on the day of your wedding, even when we didn't have your ceremony outside.  I really loved the mariachi band, and, well, I can't thank you enough for having that margarita machine.  That was a first for me at a wedding and I hope to see more of them!

Helena and Dan, thank you for writing some of the most emotional vows I've ever heard.  I was crying like a baby while photographing you, but only out of happiness!   I loved spending the day with you, Marco and Gigi.  I can't wait to see your family expand with a new little girl in a few months!

Lauren and Kunal, thank you for being incredibly calm for one of the busiest weddings I've ever photographed!  Your cool demeanor kept me cool as well!  Also, thank you for that amazing Indian food and southern comfort food fusion.  I didn't know it could be done, but you guys knocked it outta the park!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_13 thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_14

Alexis and Andrew, thank you for having the most hilarious wedding party and guests ever.  Between the adorable ring bearer (I still get comments on him!) the bridesmaids dance and Kate Middleton and Prince William making an appearance...I seriously had a blast.  And that staircase shot will always be one of my fav's!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_16

Mariah and Evan, thank you for your overwhelming positivity on your wedding day.  Your excitement to marry each other made me seriously giddy!  And thank you for indulging me and asking the firemen if we could take some photos with the firetruck!  I will never forget that!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_18

Sarah and Justin, thank you for having such an emotion-filled wedding.  I think everyone felt a full range of emotion from tears to complete laugh-out-loud excitement!  And of course nothing was more exciting then Sarah doing the worm during the reception!  It was incredible!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_20

Jess and Matt, thank you for having fun with each other on your wedding day.  You two were constantly looking at each other, making faces and smiling, which I just loved.  Matt, I'll always love that you shot hoops before your ceremony.  And I can't thank you both enough for having gluten-free Georgetown Cupcakes at the reception!  Made my night!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_22

Amanda and Adam, thank you for one of the cutest first looks I've ever photographed!  Thank you for trusting me to take you outside in the shade for five minutes in the 110 degree heat, as I'm sure you were skeptical.  But hey, you both didn't sweat at all and you looked great!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_24

Deanna and Joe, thank you for remaining the calmest of calm on a day where storms kept creeping in!  Even though a storm came through right before the ceremony, and even though it rained during some of the portraits, you guys were total champs and let me photograph you wherever I wanted.  Also, I'll never forget your sparkler exit which consisted of more smoke then sparkle due to the high wind!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_25

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_26

Dayna and Ryan, thank you for being that couple that just wanted to get married real fast so you could celebrate!  What I remember most is your reception and what a blast you and your guests had dancing until the party was forced to shut down.  It was awesome!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_28

Tracy and Adam, thank you for doing hilarious poses for me, like sticking your tongue out (which is an Adam thing) and wearing your sunglasses like badasses.  Also, thank you for being the first couple to introduce me to Gangnam Style at their reception!  And you guys totally knew the dance and everything!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_29

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_30

Mia and Rob, thank you for being all smiles from start to finish, even when we had the threat of rain all day.  Thank you for indulging me with my obsession with the rooftop of the DAR Museum (loved those photos) and I thought Mia surprising Rob with donuts at the reception was exceptionally awesome!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_34

Jen and Joel, thank you for being so excited to marry each other.  It was as if no other people were in the room but you all during your vows!  And thank you for inviting me to spend time with you family and friends prior to the wedding...just to get to know them.  I absolutely loved that!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_31

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_32

Anne and Sam, thank you for persevering on your wedding day when a lot of stuff went wrong!  Sure the wedding started late, but it didn't matter at all.  It was incredible!  Also, thank you for hopping in my little car and riding with me up the hill to take some stellar portraits of you two!  It was totally worth it and I'd do it again!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_35

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_36

Liz and Tim, thank you for letting me take a zillion photos of you guys, even though I know you're not photo people!  And thank you for walking up that staircase back and forth at the Hotel Monaco.  I was a little obsessed, but only because you guys looked amazing on it!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_47

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_48

Natalie and Nathan, I think you officially win silliest couple of 2012!  Thank you for your energy and for always making everyone around you laugh.  Aside from the cigar photo, I think I'll always remember your epic bobble heads that you had at your wedding!  So cool!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_37

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_38

Ashley and Will, thank you for being so low-key on your wedding day.  Thank you for never panicking even when so much was going on, and thank you (a million thank you's) for bringing your amazing Ducati motorcycle!  That is something I will never forget!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_39

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_40

Karleigh and Jack, thank you for having the party of 2012!  I knew you guys were high-energy and so much fun, but when your reception rolled around, I had no idea it would be like a rock concert!  It was seriously one of the best times I've ever had at a reception!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_42

Evan and Shari, thank you for trying to take outdoor photos when it was frigidly cold!  You guys really made an effort, which was amazing.  I still loved our indoor photos, and I really loved our nighttime shot of you guys in front of the key bridge!

thank_you_wedding_couples_2012_44

Molly and Dave, thank you for your excitement about each other leading up to your first look.  I just love the portraits of you two together!  And thank you for having a fun, upbeat reception where even I got to let loose and hang out with you guys and some friends.  Your wedding was the perfect ending to my 2012 year!

Shari and Evan's Key Bridge Marriott Wedding!

You may remember Shari and Evan from their DC nighttime engagement session, and they're back with their wedding that took place at Key Bridge Marriott! What I loved most about working with Shari and Evan is how deliriously happy they both were to become husband and wife...especially Shari!  Shari was the perfect vision of a bride just thrilled to be getting married and you can certainly tell from the photos.  Her spirit was totally infectious and I loved every minute of photographing their wedding!  It's hard to narrow down my favorite photos from their big day, but I mostly loved any interaction Shari and Evan had, and also a few party photos.  The whole event was one big joyous celebration and I was so lucky to be a part of everything.

Shari and Evan, thanks so much to you and your family for letting me be a part of your big day!  Enjoy!

Natalie and Nathan's Northern Virginia Wedding!

Try to not feel the love from this blog post, I dare you!  Natalie and Nathan (also known as the NBs, as they both share the initials "NB") recently tied the knot at McLean Presbyterian Church and Springfield Country Club, and boy did we have a phenomenal time!  Natalie and Nathan are two people who love each other so much...so much that it's hard for them to hide their excitement!  I absolutely adored photographing them as they would embrace, goof around and just genuinely have a fun time together. We started off the day at McLean Pres where the NBs did a first look and lots of photos on the front end of the day to make our lives so much easier!  Not only did Natalie and Nathan goof off, but so did their wedding party!  I just love weddings where people don't take themselves too seriously and know how to have fun.  The ceremony was absolutely beautiful, and I loved capturing Nathan's face as Natalie came down the aisle.  I also really loved the ring bearer who took it upon himself to run about during the ceremony wherever he pleased.  Too cute!  After the ceremony we all headed to Springfield Country Club for the NBs upbeat reception which did not disappoint!  My fav photos from the reception might be the boys outside smoking cigars and pipes...but I also love the shot of Natalie and Nathan in the library with the chandelier!  Also, don't miss out on the NBs custom made bobble-head display...it's awesome!  :)

Thanks so much to Natalie and Nathan for having me photograph their special day!  I had an absolute blast with you two and your family and friends!  I hope you enjoy your photos!

Liz and Tim's Hotel Monaco Washington, DC Wedding!

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a Liz and Tim's beautiful wedding at the Hotel Monaco in DC!  I had been to the Hotel Monaco before (and have always loved it for it's history and unique decor), so was really excited to be photographing a wedding in this unique space!  Liz and Tim decided to do a first look before their ceremony, and I was really excited about it because I had Liz go up this amazing stairwell to meet up with Tim!  Of course Liz and Tim looked so gorgeous and classic, and I just loved their first look reactions to each other. Liz and Tim's ceremony was in the Paris Ballroom, and boy did it look amazing.  I can't tell you how much gorgeous decor and lighting can transform a space!  I loved the intimacy of Liz and Tim's ceremony, as family was completely surrounding them as they exchanged vows.  Both Liz and Tim were beaming and looked absolutely giddy about getting married!  After the ceremony, everyone took an awesome break at the cocktail hour, and Liz and Tim even got to come in and enjoy it with their guests!  Meanwhile, A Sweet Soiree Events and her team flipped the Paris Ballroom into an absolutely stunning and dramatic reception space!  I think everyone who re-entered the room lit up with excitement at how cool it looked!  After Liz and Tim were announced we all enjoyed some dancing, amazing food, toasts and more dancing!  Oh, and don't forget the silly string (which I hadn't seen in YEARS!).  ;)

I want to thank Liz and Tim and their entire group of friends and family for having me photograph on their special day!  And many thanks to all of the incredible vendors that helped make it happen, especially A Sweet Soiree Events.  Enjoy!

Anne and Sam's Bluemont Vineyard Wedding!

Today's awesome blog post is about two amazing people: Anne and Sam!  Anne and Sam are probably one of the most attractive couples I've ever met.  I would hate them if I didn't know them (due to their extreme attractiveness, of course), but I can't!  When I sat down with them for the first time I felt like we were old friends.  They're two incredible people, inside and out, and I was honored to photograph their wedding at Bluemont Vineyard! I started the day out with Anne, her bridesmaids and family in Ashburn where all of the gals were getting ready.  Anne had already strategically positioned her dress, the bridesmaids dresses, and a slew of other details for me to photograph that made my job so much easier!  I was completely in awe of Anne's dress on the hanger, but nothing compared to when Anne finally had her dress on.  I think everyone in the room was completely taken aback by how stunning Anne looked! After everyone was ready, we hightailed it to Bluemont so we could get some photos done before the ceremony!  Sam and the groomsmen met us at Bluemont, and once the girls were done we were able to get some pretty stellar guy photos.  My favorites are of Sam playing football with his groomsmen.  I requested they make up some sort of play (this is where you are probably realizing know nothing about football), and they agreed to it and did a pretty phenomenal job!

After our football shenanigans, we all went inside to prep for the ceremony.  The ceremony was outside overlooking the Loudoun Valley, and it couldn't have been a lovelier day.  Anne and Sam absolutely beamed during their vows, and I have to admit I got choked up when Anne began to cry!  But she gracefully recovered and looked completely amazing by the time the couple recessed down the aisle.  After some family photos, I drove Anne and Sam up the hill closer to the tasting room to some vines where the view of Virginia is even better than at the stable.  I'm really glad we did this, as the view was completely different from anything else we had seen earlier in the day.  That and the grapes on the vines were perfection!  Once finished with the couples photos, we headed back down to the stable for some serious partying!  My favorite part of the reception was when Sam was taking off Anne's garter.  Somehow, someway, he sneaked a football under the dress and took the garter off her leg and onto the football.  Then, of course, he threw the football out to all of his single guy friends, and his adorable nephew caught it and there was much rejoicing.  Love it!

I could go on and on about Anne and Sam's wedding (I know, I kind of already have), but you should really just look at all of their beautiful photos.  I want to thank Anne and Sam and their family and friends for allowing me to be there for their special day!  I had an incredible time and I hope you enjoy the photos.  :)

Mia and Rob's Daughters of the American Revolution Museum Wedding!

There is so much to love about Mia and Rob's wedding that took place at the Daughters of American Revolution Museum!  First off, their color palette was amazing.  You'll know straight away with the photos what I mean.  I love that they used a paint splatter of yellow, pink and purple on their invites, and they carried those colors through their flowers, table decorations, and even their uplighting at their reception.  Secondly, they used their rottweiler, Paige, as an inspiration for their reception decor.  They even had people sign a portrait of her!  Anyone who is willing to use their dog as part of their wedding has my seal of approval! Mia and Rob's big day began at The Willard in Washington, D.C.  We were able to get some great getting ready photos, followed by Mia and Rob's super cute first look!  Afterward, even though it started raining slightly, Mia, Rob and their fearless gang (the wedding party) began the journey on foot over to the DAR!  By the time we arrived the rain stopped and we were able to capture some really awesome photos just outside the DAR and then on the roof!  Personally, I'm obsessed with that rooftop view.  I love that I can see the Washington Monument and then turn and get a really crazy picture of the green copper facade of the DAR.  So cool!

Due to the threat of rain, the ceremony was inside under the DAR's portico.  It was still really beautiful, and both Mia and Rob looked like they were having the time of their lives tying the knot!  Afterward I took a few more photos of Mia and Rob on the roof and then it was time for the reception!  I still can't get over all of the amazing bright colors they used and how it all tied in perfectly. After dinner, Mia switched into her second dress of the evening before their first dance.  I particularly loved the uplighting outside which was rotating all of their signature colors.  Another awesome detail Mia and Rob had was...a donut stand!  It was torture for a gluten-free eater such as myself, but man, those cake donuts looked amazing!  To end the night, I took Mia and Rob back upstairs on the roof and lit them up with the green facade of the DAR and the very beautiful Washington Monument.  I told you I couldn't get enough of that view!  :)

Many thanks to Mia, Rob and their families and friends for letting me be a part of their big day.  And also, many thanks to all of the incredible vendors they used.  This wedding was a WIN!

Tracy and Adam's Fort Belvoir Wedding!

Today's blog post features the super adorable couple of Tracy and Adam!  Tracy and Adam were married at Fort Belvoir and their wedding day was absolutely beautiful.  We were able to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and head down to a nearby beach after their ceremony, and I thought their photos turned out awesomely!  Tracy and Adam were the perfect models, and I particularly love the shots of them in their sunglasses.  Do they look badass or what?  :)  But my favorite part of their wedding was probably being introduced to Gangnam Style for the first time ever.  You can see that it was a huge hit in the photo below where Adam is dancing.  Tracy clearly thought it was hilarious (as did I!).  Can't seem to get that song out of my head now!  :) Many thanks to Tracy, Adam and their friends and family for having me there for their big day.  I hope you enjoy the photos!

Dayna and Ryan's Top of the Town Wedding!

It's time to show off Dayna and Ryan's Top of the Town wedding in Arlington, Virginia!  I had such a blast photographing this couples wedding.  I knew as soon as I started my day off with the ladies at the hotel that it was going to be a super fun and vibrant day.  And it really, really was!  The color of the day was definitely blue, as it carried out in all the details including the flowers, cake, candy bar and even the event lighting!  Combine those colors with the stunning views we had from Top of the Town, and we were able to get some pretty stellar photographs! I just want to thank Dayna and Ryan for having me photograph their special day!  I had such a fun time with you both and your friends and family!  Enjoy!

Deanna and Joe's Whitehall Manor Wedding!

It wasn't so long ago that I spent a stormy afternoon photographing the wedding of one of my couples, Deanna and Joe!  They were married at Whitehall Manor in Bluemont, Virginia, and although we were supposed to have steamy 100 degree weather, luckily some storms came through that cooled everything off and brought some much needed rain.  Personally, I was really excited about the rain (I'm one of those people that loves storms), so for me it was a dream come true to have some overcast clouds and cooler weather to in. Deanna and Joe were both completely calm about the rain that came in before their ceremony.  You'll see in a photograph that Deanna was talking through a door, and that's because she was confirming with Joe that they were a "go" for their outdoor ceremony, as it looked like we would get a break in the rain.  Once Deanna was in her dress, I couldn't resist getting some photos of her naturally looking out the window to see if the rain was subsiding.  The light was so perfect!  When the ceremony finally commenced, everything went perfectly.  Sure, there it sprinkled a bit and there was thunder in the distance, but Deanna and Joe were beaming with excitement during the whole ceremony, and it really showed in the photos!  After the ceremony we had to dodge some rain, but did manage to get some outdoor photos done before the reception!

The reception was indoors and I think everyone completely relaxed once we were all inside!  Without the threat of rain, everyone managed to let loose, laugh and just party!  One of my favorite images from the night is from Deanna and Joe's sparkler send-off, which was a little crazy!  Because it had been stormy all day, at certain times there was a decent amount of wind.  Welp, when it was time for Deanna and Joe to leave there was a lot of wind, and let's just say that sparklers and wind create a lot of smoke and a lot of flying sparks everywhere (and boy did those sparks hurt!).  However, it certainly made for an interesting photo!  :)

Many thanks to Deanna and Joe for allowing me to photograph their special day!  I hope you enjoy the photos!

Amanda and Adam's Westin Alexandria Wedding!

Happy Friday, everyone!  Today I'm blogging on two very awesome people, Amanda and Adam!  Amanda and Adam were married at the Westin Alexandria in Alexandria, Virginia on one of the hottest days of the summer, so you can imagine how excited I was when the entire celebration was indoors!  Of course, I'm sure they (and their guests) were equally as excited! Amanda and Adam wanted to start their day off with a first look, and since it's been quite a few weddings since I've actually had a first look, I was thrilled with theirs!  I've never done a first look with a couple perfectly back-to-back, and I thought their reactions were just so cute!  You could tell how happy their were to see each other and it definitely created a calm over them before their ceremony.  Also, can I just say that I love Amanda's wreath that she wore? I haven't seen a bride wear a wreath/veil combination before, and I thought she looked amazing with it!

Amanda and Adam's wedding ceremony was simple and beautiful.  They both were all smiles during the entire event which made for some super cute photos.  After their ceremony, we did make the brave decision to go outside for a few photographs in the courtyard in front of the Westin.  Even though it was incredibly hot, we were in the shade and were mayyyybe outside for 10 minutes max.  But I think it was worth it because Amanda and Adam just look so darn great in their photos!

Once we were back inside it was clear the party was on!  Everyone had an incredible time dancing and letting loose.  At the end of the night I decided to take a shot with one of the Westin windows that had a clear, beautiful view of the George Washington Masonic Memorial (a staple view in Alexandria) and I was really pleased with how the photo turned out!

Many thanks to Amanda and Adam, their family and friends for having me along for the ride!  Also, I have to give a huge shout out to Graceful Weddings who kept the day moving along smoothly and who were always willing to step in as my test subjects when I needed them.  Enjoy!

Jess and Matt's Georgetown and Carnegie Institute Wedding!

You may remember Jess and Matt from their Capitol Hill engagement session back in the fall.  Welp, they're back on the blog this time because their wedding was last month and it is stunning! Jess and Matt both attend Holy Catholic Trinity Church in Georgetown, so it was only natural that they held the wedding there.  Honestly, the grounds were a photographers dream, with the historic church and chapel and some beautiful gardens in the back part of the property.  There were pink hydrangeas in bloom that matched Jess and Matt's color scheme perfectly!  Also, there's a basketball court on one side of the church, so naturally Matt decided to bring his basketball and shoot some hoops before the ceremony.  I put him to the test and had him take a few shots backwards, just to see if he had any wedding day luck on his side!  Of course, he did, so he made a couple of shots which you'll see below!

The ceremony was just gorgeous and I loved how excited Jess and Matt were to be married.  They kept looking at each other over and over during the ceremony and just grinning from ear to ear.  They even cheered once they were finally pronounced husband and wife, which was too stinkin' cute!

After the ceremony we took a few photos of the amazing wedding party at a nearby park, and then headed to the gorgeous reception site of Carnegie Institute of Science!  Talk about another place with some amazing photographic opportunities!  From the sun-kissed dancing photos, to the sun-kissed outdoor photos and then back inside for some dramatic night-time shots, I could not complain with how these turned out!  Jess and Matt learned how to dance before their big day, and you can tell in the photos.  I am a huge fan of Jess' long blonde hair moving (she did that in her engagement session), so I was really happy when her hair got some movement during the dance and then again later in a portrait!

I can't thank Jess and Matt enough for having me photograph their wedding day!  I had such an amazing time with you, Jess and Matt, and I hope you love these photos!  Also, many thanks to the vendors below for making this wedding day so magical!
