Mariah and Evan's Northern Virginia Wedding!

It's time to show off Mariah and Evan's wedding here in northern Virginia, and I'm super excited for you to see!  You may remember Mariah and Evan from their crazy cute fall engagement session, and I'm happy to report that Mariah and Evan were just as fun and silly on their wedding day as they were in their engagement photos!  Yay! Mariah and Evan were married at Evan's childhood church, Parkwood Baptist, followed by a reception at the Burke Volunteer Fire Department, both in Burke, Virginia.  Straight from the get-go, I loved the energy of their wedding day.  Both Mariah and Evan were beaming, and you just knew without asking how excited they were to be married.  Some of my favorite shots of the day were of Mariah and Evan just being naturally silly.  During their first kiss, Evan held up his hand to say "Just a moment please, I am not done kissing my new wife!"  Evan also gave me a cat-like sassy pose in their portrait, followed by the two of them just being so dang giddy to be married they couldn't stand it.  We made a pit stop in between the church and reception at Lake Braddock for a few photos that I absolutely adored too.  Seriously, this couple couldn't be any cuter!

But my favorite part of the evening was definitely scheming with Mariah to get a fire truck portrait!  Having your reception at a fire department definitely means you can't leave without some fire truck photo, right?  I even convinced Mariah to use a one-liner on the fire men: "Our love is on fi-yah!  And the only way we can put it out is if we have a photo with the fire truck!"  Thank you, thank you...I'll be here all night!  But of course, Mariah is far cuter than I am, so she managed to charm them and of course we got our amazeballs fire truck portrait!  Seriously, many thanks to the Burke Volunteer Fire Department for humoring us and letting us photograph with their shiny yellow fire truck!  :)

Many thanks to Mariah and Evan for having me photograph their wedding day!  I had an incredible time and I hope you enjoy your photos!  :D

Thanks for looking!

Alexis and Andrew's Oxon Hill Manor Wedding!

It's pretty crazy to think that I met Alexis and Andrew almost a year and a half ago!  Alexis found me through the amazing local area blog, United with Love, and I couldn't be more thankful for that!  I've enjoyed each time I have spent with this couple, whether that was at their engagement session or just meeting to go over wedding logistics.  They're just awesome! Alexis and Andrew's wedding day began at the Embassy Suites in Old Town, a gorgeous hotel not too far from Oxon Hill Manor.  I really loved some of the getting ready photos, just because you could really feel the emotion of the day in them.  Alexis looked absolutely stunning in her wedding gown, and you could see how excited all her bridesmaids were for her!  Once we all arrived at Oxon Hill I was able to take a few bridal portraits of Alexis which I just looooooooove.  She just has this old Hollywood glamour about her that is hard to stop photographing!  But I think my favorite getting ready photo was of Alexis and her dad in her suite.  Taken through the mirror on the wall, you can see her father's excitement seeing her for the first time in her dress.  It's just so sweet!

The rest of the wedding day was absolutely beautiful.  Alexis and Andrew's ceremony was a traditional Ukrainian ceremony, which had a lot of elements I enjoyed.  My favorite part was probably the crowning of Alexis and Andrew.  This was when Alexis and Andrew were both crowned with wreaths, which symbolizes that they will be the king and queen of their own family kingdom, ruling side by side.  Who wouldn't love that?  :)  After the ceremony we took lots of awesome photos, and it you'll notice through the photos you see that the wedding instantly turned into a fun celebration.  Everyone was just having an amazing time, even before we started the reception!  Once the reception started rolling though, more fun was to be had for sure.  One of my favorite parts of the reception was her maid of honor starting her toast to Alexis, but then launching into a dance sequence with the other bridesmaids and dancing around Alexis.  It was amaaaaaazing!  But I can't forget about one of my favorite guest appearances, Morton the mallard.  It's a tradition with Alexis and her Boston University gals to bring Morton to every wedding they attend and make sure he's photographed throughout the reception.  I think Morton had a great time (as did I!).

Many thanks to Alexis and Andrew for having me photograph their big day!  I had an absolute blast!  Also a huge thank you to Maria at HJ Planners for all of her hard work, along with Zack Pope of Roundz Catering for making some of the best food I've ever had at a wedding!  I hope you enjoy the photos!

Lauren and Kunal's Hindu and Christian Wedding in Northern Virginia!

It's finally here!  Lauren and Kunal's jam-packed wedding day complete with two incredible ceremonies: one Hindu and one Christian!  Yay! I've already gushed about Lauren and Kunal in their super cute engagement session and their wedding sneak peek, but I may just have to gush some more!  I just love them!  Lauren and Kunal were married (twice!) at the Fairview Park Marriott in Falls Church, and man did we have a good time.  To start the day, Lauren and Kunal got ready in their respective rooms, but I spent most of the time with Lauren as she really went through quite a transformation with her makeup, jewelry and sari!  After we took some photos with both groups, Kunal had to get ready for the baraat, the Hindu wedding procession in which the brides parents welcome the groom.  I love the milini where Lauren's mom welcomes Kunal by blessing him with a tilak, or mark on his forehead.  So cool!  The rest of the Hindu ceremony was just beautiful and I thought Lauren looked absolutely stunning throughout the whole thing!   My favorite part of the ceremony was the charthurthi karma when Lauren and Kunal fed each other four times for nourishment of the bone, muscle, skin and soul.  It was clear they were both a little hungry and were happy to eat!  :)

After the Hindu ceremony, there was as quick of a change as possible into the attire for the Christian ceremony!  The Christian ceremony was held in the same space as the Hindu ceremony, and Courtney of A Sweet Soiree Evenets did an awesome job with the turnaround of that process!  You could tell that Lauren and Kunal were super happy during the ceremony, and particularly Kunal at the end!  With the stress of two ceremonies, it's always nice to be done with the second one and officially married!  After the Christian ceremony we went back outdoors for some group photos that everyone happily participated in.  I really love the photograph of Lauren with some of her flower girls, as it's just adorable!  I swear, the kids in attendance at this wedding could not get any cuter!  :D

The reception following the ceremonies was absolutely beautiful and I loved how there was so much color in the room!  It did not take long for everyone to relax, eat a ton of Indian AND Louisiana-inspired food (think fried chicken and mac & cheese!), and dance the night away.  One of my favorite shots of the evening though was at the very end, where I took Lauren and Kunal out into the hotel lobby with...you'll never guess...a fish tank!  Yes, there was this awesomely lit fish tank in the hotel, which just so happened to match the color of Lauren and Kunal's reception.  I shot through the fish tank for some end-of-the-night photos and could not be happier with the results.

I want to thank Lauren and Kunal for having me photograph their amazing wedding day, and also thank their family and friends for being so great to work with!  I'd also like to thank Courtney Swierczek of A Sweet Soiree Events and Matt Buerhaus of Buerhaus Design for being so helpful throughout the day.  More vendors at the bottom!  :)  Enjoy!

Mariah and Evan's Northern Virginia Wedding - Sneak Peek!

I recently got to photograph two the sweetest (and funniest) people ever, Mariah and Evan!  You may remember them from their super cute fall engagement session, and now their back to show off their spring wedding! It was hard narrowing down some sneak peeks, but here are three I really love.  Two in particular are super special because we were able to photograph with...wait for it...a fire truck!  Mariah and Evan had their reception at the Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, so naturally Mariah and I were going to do everything in our power to photograph with a fire truck.  She even dropped this awesome phrase to the firemen to complete our mission:  "Our love is on fi-yah!  And the only thing that can put it out is a photo in front of a fire truck!"  Ha ha ha!  I hope you guys enjoy the sneak peeks!  :)

Helena and Dan's WWI Memorial Wedding!

It's pretty rare that I cry at weddings.  I'm usually so in the photography zone that even the sappiest of ceremonies don't really affect me...until now.  Helena and Dan's wedding had me crying, and here's why... Helena and Dan were married at the WWI Memorial a few weeks ago, and I have to say, they had one of the most beautiful, intimate ceremonies I've been to in a while.  Married among a small group family and friends, Helen and Dan shared the most moving sentiments toward one another in their vow exchange...particularly because they were creating a new family for themselves.  Dan has two children from a previous marriage, Marco and Gigi, and I knew before their wedding just how much Marco and Gigi meant to Helena.  Helena said the sweetest things about Dan and her new step-children during her vows.  She said she never would have imagined this life for herself, but said meeting Dan, Marco and Gigi was the best thing that's ever happened to her.  Aaaaaaaand that's when the tears started flowing from Helena, me, and plenty of others who were there!  But they were such happy tears, because knowing Helena and Dan found each other was just so wonderful.  They're truly an incredible couple, and their children, Marco and Gigi, are some of the sweetest, well-behaved kids I've ever met.

We weren't at the WWI Memorial for too long after the ceremony, so it allowed us to travel to lots of places in DC for photos!  Our first stop was Constitution Gardens, where we had to brave some baby geese (who hissed at us!) to get to the spot we wanted.  Afterward we headed to Meridian Hill Park for some beautiful shots (and yes, where I waded in some water), followed by some photographs near the National Gallery of Art.  We had such a fun time getting to travel around for a couple of hours and managed to get tons of different photos from the experience (this is where I plug to all brides to make room for portraits!  It pays off!  :D).  Marco and Gigi were along for the ride along with Helena's mom, and boy were they all great sports posing with us in all of these different spots!

Many thanks to Helena, Dan, Marco, Gigi, and the rest of their family and friends for allowing me to be a part of their special day!  You were all an absolute joy to work with!  I hope you love these photos!

P.S.  Notice some pretty stellar cuff links that Marco was sporting?  They were his lightsaber cuff links!  And it couldn't have been more appropriate, as Helena and Dan's wedding day was May 4th (May the Fourth be with you!).  ;)

Alexis and Andrew's Oxon Hill Manor Wedding - Sneak Peek!

This past Friday I finally got to photograph Alexis and Andrew's wedding at Oxon Hill Manor in Oxon Hill, Maryland!  I've been waiting over a year for their special day, and I was so excited to be a part of it.  I was also excited to try out a photograph I had pictured in my head for a while with the two of them, which was on the staircase at Oxon Hill.  It's one of my favorite shots from this year, and I hope you enjoy it!  More to come!

Maria and Wayne's Old Town Alexandria Wedding!

Today I get to blog about a really amazing couple, Maria and Wayne!  Just a short time ago, Maria and Wayne were married at the Hilton Old Town Alexandria, and as I'm sure you'll tell from the photos, they were beyond excited about becoming husband and wife! On the day of their wedding we were hoping to have the ceremony outdoors, but there was just too much of a rain threat, so we brought it all inside!  Maria was as cool as a cucumber up in her suite, and I about died when I saw and photographed her wedding dress.  Honestly, I'd never seen a dress quite like it (I guess if I had to compare it to something, it made me reminisce about Jennifer Connolly's white satin dress in the Rocketeer...even though the material and fit was a little different).  Maria just looked stunning in her dress, so I made sure we got some gorgeous photographs of her before we headed downstairs for her and Wayne's ceremony!

The ceremony was full of tons of laughter, which made the whole experience so much fun.  Afterward,  we went outside while the weather was cooperating for and took some photos with family and, of course, the happy couple.  Maria and Wayne were really like pros when it came to modeling, and so far Maria's pose with her veil as a filter (her looking off in the distance) is one of my favorite shots this year!

The reception was probably one of the best parts of Maria and Wayne's wedding day though, as everyone really just breathed easy and let loose!  Maria and Wayne had a mariachi band at their cocktail hour which her father accompanied for a few songs.  They also had a frozen margarita machine (!!!!) and then wondered why in the world no one utilized that at other weddings I've photographed!  The reception room was absolutely stunning, filled with lots of details that echoed how much Maria and Wayne love to travel (note the couple sitting on suitcases on their cake!). It was such a joy to see everyone party on the dance floor and have a great time.  Everyone in that room loved and cared for Maria and Wayne so much, and nothing could make this photographer happier!

Congrats, Maria and Wayne!  Thanks so much for letting me be a part of your special day!  Enjoy!

Helena and Dan's WWI Memorial Wedding - Sneak Peeks!

On Friday I was thrilled to be able to photograph Helena and Dan's wedding at the WWI Memorial in Washington, DC.  Their intimate wedding was absolutely beautiful (I cried, a lot!), and then we traveled around DC taking some more photos of the happy couple and family.  Here are two sneak peeks I really loved, one in front of a WWI Memorial column, and the next at the fountains at the National Gallery of Art.  I hope you enjoy them!

Suzannah and Keith's Bluemont Vineyard Wedding!

A few weeks back I had the honor of photographing Suzannah and Keith's Wedding at The Stable at Bluemont Vineyard in Bluemont, Virginia!  Their wedding day was absolutely perfect, with a nice blue sky, puffy clouds, and a lovely warmth that makes you inhale the goodness of spring.  I adored working with this couple because they were just so laid back and were completely on board to do any kind of photographs I wanted!  Little did I know that when we walked outside to do some photos before the ceremony that they both were prepared to become instant models!  They completely shocked me (in the best way possible) with their calm composure and stunning looks. Their ceremony was filled with so much joy and laughter.  True story: The ceremony began with "Mawwwaaaaage!" just like the Princess Bride wedding ceremony.  Could Suzannah and Keith be any cuter?  I think not!  But then of course Suzannah did do something cuter and jumped for joy right when they were pronounced man and wife.  This is the gal that when I email always tells me she's twirling, so I'm sure you can imagine how joyful she really is!

The reception was simply stunning inside The Stable at Bluemont Vineyard.  It was very simple and rustic, and I loved how Suzannah and Keith donated money to the ASPCA in lieu of wedding favors.  So awesome!  You'll notice too, that they have a love for animals as their cake toppers not only featured themselves, but their adorable four cats!  Yay!  After dinner everyone danced the night away, participated in an old school photo booth, and generally just had a good time.  That night after things winded down a bit, I was able to drag Suzannah and Keith outside to a stable down the hill for some really cool night photos that we had all talked about.  Keith was a champ and let me borrow his huge man coat, and although I know I looked like a big puffball while setting up the shot and taking the photos, it was well worth it!

I really hope you enjoy all of the photos below!  And to Suzannah and Keith, and their family and friends, thank you so much for letting me be a part of your day.  I had an absolute blast, and I hope I get to see Suzannah and Keith in the fall!  More red hair, please!  ;)

Crystal and Stephen's Dumbarton House and China Garden Wedding!

I'm so excited to share Crystal and Stephen's full wedding with you today!  I don't even know where to begin with this couple.  When I met with them the first time they told me all about their history, and it was pretty incredible to hear.  Both Crystal and Stephen's parents knew each other before Crystal and Stephen were even born, and Stephen's parents even guessed that Crystal would be a girl.  Needless to say, Crystal and Stephen ending up together is a real-life fairy tale, and I'm so honored I was there to photograph their big day! We started the day at the Hyatt Arlington where the gals and guys got ready, and boy did I love some of the getting ready photos we took!  I got a little carried away with Crystal, but she just looked so gorgeous and she kept doing all of these amazing poses...I couldn't help myself!  After we left the Hyatt we headed straight for The Dumbarton House for the wedding ceremony.  Due to the rain everything was indoors, but it still looked so lovely!  Crystal and Stephen tied the knot and included a red Chinese rope in their ceremony, which I had never seen before.  Red is a color you'll see a lot in their photos, because signifies love, joy and prosperity in the Chinese wedding tradition.  After their ceremony we stayed for a bit a Dumbarton and got some great group photos, and yes, you guessed it, went out in the rain for a bit!  Crystal coordinated everything so well with some umbrella's and I was really pleased with those shots!

Before we went to the reception, I asked if we could go back to the Hyatt's lobby and utilize this giant bench and cool background for some photos.  The best part about that was the giant bench I wanted to utilize was...bright red!  So, keeping in line with the prosperity of the Chinese tradition, we got some great photos of the wedding party and the happy couple before we hit up China Garden.

Once we got to China Garden, a party was unleashed!  Crystal and Stephen had their first dance, then changed into their Chinese attire, and then launched into some awesome Chinese traditions.  First, Crystal and Stephen had a tea ceremony where they offered tea to their parents and elders in their family, and in return received lucky red envelopes full of jewelry and money.  Second, they had an incredible Chinese Lion Dance with drummers come in and perform for the bride and groom!  The lions went all over the room collecting gifts for Crystal and Stephen while doing some really crazy dancing!  My favorite part of the dance was when Crystal and Stephen offered the lions lettuce, which is representational of their payment for the dance.  Then the lions chewed the lettuce and spit it out to spread prosperity in all directions.  The lions then offered Crystal and Stephen their gifts and it was all over!  The last tradition I experienced with Crystal and Stephen was the table toasting, where the bride and groom walk around to each table to thank their family and friends for the gifts they've offered.  It was really sweet to watch them walk around and acknowledge everyone there!

Once the traditions were finished, Crystal and Stephen changed back into their original attire and they got to relax and dance the night away.  Before I left, I did get some pretty great shots of them just outside of China Garden in an elevator lobby, which I just loved.  Stephen is solely responsible for making that happen, as we had some security issues with being able to use the space, but of course he worked his magic.  Did I mention how great Crystal and Stephen are?  ;)

Many thanks to Crystal, Stephen and their friends and family for letting me be part of their special day.  And also many thanks to Roberts Event Planning for keeping the day super awesome and organized.  More vendors at the bottom of this post!  Enjoy!

This past weekend I had the honor of photographing Suzannah and Keith's wedding at Bluemont Vineyard, and I'm so pleased with their photos!  Suzannah and Keith are complete naturals in front of the camera and both embraced some fun ideas I had, one of which was lighting up a a completely dark stable at night!  Chilly as it was for that shot, I think it was totally worth it!  I hope you enjoy their three sneak peeks below!  :)

Crystal and Stephen's DC/VA Wedding - Sneak Peeks!

This past weekends wedding with Crystal and Stephen was fantastic, even if it did rain!  We spent most of our time indoors, but that didn't stop us from getting a few shots outside (of course!  Don't you know I'm always game for rain!).  ;)  Below are a few sneak peeks from their stunning wedding at the Dumbarton House and China Garden.  I hope you enjoy!  Happy Monday!

Maggie and Lucas' Northern Virginia Wedding!

It's time for the full blog post of Maggie and Lucas' amazing wedding!  Yay! First off, let me just say how excited I was to work with this couple.  Maggie contacted me a few months ago about their wedding, and she booked me without ever meeting me.  However, I could tell by our emailing what a down-to-earth gal she was, and by the time we met I went straight in for a hug!  She's just the kind of person you feel like you've been friends with your whole life, that's how awesome she is.  Also amazingly, I met Lucas and the rest of the family by chance on a trip to Chipotle!  Lucas actually lives in Connecticut (and Maggie is moving there), but in a purely coincidental moment, Lucas, his family and Maggie's family happened to all travel to Alexandria to hang out about a two months before the big day...and I ran into them!  What can I say, I get hungry after consults sometimes, and I was so excited to meet Lucas and Co., even if it was at a Chipotle!  I knew right then and there that their wedding was going to be an incredible time for me.

The big day was amazing.  It was fairly warm outside for a March day, and Maggie and Lucas were so kind and easy-going on the day of.  Whatever I wanted them to try out, they did.  Even leading right up to the wedding, I dragged Lucas and Maggie to this amazing window for some portraits that I told them would be worth it, and they totally trusted me!  Their wedding party was equally as awesome, cooperating fully and even helping me out with carrying some equipment around!  How awesome is that?!

There's so much I love about this wedding.  I love the colors of pink, grey, black and white.  I love the details, including a handkerchief that Maggie's mom made for her on the day of her wedding.  But I think most of all I just love this couple.  The energy that their wedding had was something special, and it really resonated with me.  Maybe that's why I'm blogging so many of their images!  :D  I think you'll see what I mean though when you scroll through.

Maggie and Lucas, thank you so much for including me in your wedding day!  I was honored to be a part of it, and I hope you love the photos!

Maggie and Lucas' Northern Virginia Wedding - Sneak Peeks!

This past Saturday I had the joy of photographing two very awesome people: Maggie and Lucas!  Their wedding ceremony was at McLean Presbyterian Church in McLean, Virginia, and their ceremony was at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia.  These two sneak peek shots were both taken at McLean Presbyterian, and I'm super excited about them.  I almost passed up the opportunity to work with this window, and both of these shots were taken in that same window at different times of the day.  I was really pleased with the results!  I hope you like them!

Katie and Jeff's Reston, Virginia Wedding!

So far 2012 is off to a great start, and a lot of that is because of Katie and Jeff's wedding this past weekend!  You may remember Katie and Jeff from their engagement session last year at Three Fox Vineyards, which you can see here.  Although they had to leave their adorable Westie, Fiona, in doggie day care on the day of their wedding (sad face), I still had an amazing time reconnecting with Katie and Jeff on their big day! First off, let me just say that the weather on their February 18th wedding was incredible.  I think the temperature hit a lovely high of 60 degrees!  So it was great that Katie, Jeff, and their crew got to go outside and not have to shiver in 30 degree weather to take some photos!

We started the day off at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Herndon, Virginia, which I had actually been to before in the fall!  Although Katie and Jeff opted to not see one another before the ceremony, I was pleased with the before shots we were able to get of the two of them.  I particularly enjoyed working with Katie in the churches nursery (yes, the nursery!) for some gorgeous naturally lit bridal portraits (two below, her with the white background).  Once the ceremony began, it was smooth sailing!  Katie did have quite a few moments of laughter during the ceremony (which was fine with me, because I got some great shots!).  It all started when the minister asked everyone to turn off their cell phones, and her father (standing at the alter), promptly found his and shut it off.  I think everyone laughed at that one!  Katie and Jeff were all smiles after their nuptials and then we were off to take photos at the reception!

The reception took place at Hidden Creek Country Club, a venue tucked in the woods in Reston, Virginia!  This venue was a fun challenge for me, especially because I wanted to take photos outdoors but did not want everything to scream "This was taken on a golf course!"  So, I had lots of spots mapped out for where I wanted to go and I really think we were able to capture some fun wedding party photos and couple photos.  My favorite shot might be of Katie and Jeff kissing on the bridge, but it might only slightly beat out the photo of them with the very dramatic lighting and sunset sky in the background.  Tough choices!  After we finished wrapping up photos outside, it was time to party inside and get our dance on (and yes, I do bounce around...in case you were wondering).  I loved so many of the dancing shots, so included them below!  Katie and Jeff's reception was full of singing, dancing and a lot of love.  I had so much fun!

Thank you so much to Katie, Jeff and their friends and family!  I had an amazing time and I hope you enjoy the photos below!  Thanks for looking!
